What it says now:
Vision

Our students, educators and community benefit from the applications of current and emerging technologies. Rye School District strives to provide ongoing technology access and integration. Technology supports and enhances the educational community, providing access to a wealth of current materials and opportunities to network with the world. Through the effective use of technology, students will be better prepared to meet the demands of today's society. Successful integration of technology enhances learning in all areas of the school district including communication, productivity, research, and curriculum. The use of technology is one of the most critical components to a core foundation of a school system. Technology is constantly shaping the world in which we live and work. We must be flexible and accepting of change; today's technology will be different tomorrow. Core networking technologies will primarily be the same, but hardware and applications will change, become unsupported, and even become obsolete. We must be ready to prepare for and embrace these changes, in order to enable students, teachers, administration, and the community to advance their technological competencies. Our schools must be at the forefront of technology so students will be able to enter a new and changing workforce with the critical thinking and problem solving skills needed.

What should it say?

Vision Statements contain details of the future of the Educational organization - its vision ( future plans with aims and objectives). These types of Statements focus on tomorrow. Non profit organizations, such as an Educational organisation, write Vision statements to clarify and emphasize their future goals and the benefits which would be derived from donations

Vision Statements also define the organizations purpose, but this time they do so in terms of the organization's values rather than bottom line measures (values are guiding beliefs about how things should be done.) The vision statement communicates both the purpose and values of the organization. For employees, it gives direction about how they are expected to behave and inspires them to give their best. Shared with customers, it shapes customers' understanding of why they should work with the organization. - http://www.mindtools.com/pages/article/newLDR_90.htm

Vision Statement Creation -http://www.mindtools.com/pages/article/newLDR_90.htm

Once you've created your mission statement, move on to create your vision statement:
  1. First identify your organization's mission. Then uncover the real, human value in that mission.
  2. Next, identify what you, your customers and other stakeholders will value most about how your organization will achieve this mission. Distil these into the values that your organization has or should have.
  3. Combine your mission and values, and polish the words until you have a vision statement inspiring enough to energize and motivate people inside and outside your organization.

Vision Statements connect and are closely tied to the mission statements of an organization

RES
Learning is a journey, not merely a destination. It is our mission at RES to provide a safe, caring, supportive environment in which students are encouraged to acquire knowledge, skills, and attitudes necessary to become lifelong learners and responsible citizens. We strive to actively involve parents, teachers, and community members on this journey.
RJH
Rye Junior High School will provide appropriately responsive school programs, policies, and practices to meet the particular intellectual, physical, social, and emotional needs of each middle level learner. Young adolescents are talented in unique ways with a personal mix of diverse intelligences. Everyone within the community shares a responsibility for developing and nurturing the whole child. Every young adolescent can learn, and we resolve to make that learning a reality

Can we have one district wide vision statement if we have 2 different mission statements?

JP - I think it is ok to have one district wide vision with the two different mission statements. We want the same thing for all the students it is just expressed in a different words. I changed a couple of the quotation marks to the apostrophe that is should be. Other than that I feel that this statement says what we want.
PLR - can we have one vision? sounds good to me. Mission of both schools were agreed on with NEASC and should probably stay.
PB- I think the vision statement needs to be simplified to state how our core beliefs about student learning, as described in the schools' mission statements relate to our integration of ever evolving technology into the curriculum. Maybe how technology assists in the differentiation of instruction for all types of learners???
